EPISODE ONE - There Are Places I Remember (1940 - 1958)
In the beginning there was Liverpool. The Beatles' hometown was the catalyst for everything they would become. They were influenced by its humour, its people and its way of life. This is the beginning of the Beatles' story, told by the people who knew them in those early formative years. John's sister, Julia Baird, breaks here silence in an exclusive interview, and John's original group The Quarry Men tell the story of how the greatest song writing team of the twentieth century met at a church social function. From the long hard post war period, to the early days of Rock'n'Roll, from the upper middle class suburbs to the cold docks by the river Mersey, Liverpool was the springboard for the greatest cultural and musical revolution the world has ever known.
EPISODE TWO: One & One & One is Three (1958-1960)
Johnny and the Moondogs - not a name most people would identify with the group known the world over as the Beatles . but this was just one of the many names the Fab Four would go through before the days of world conquest. Their trials and tribulations in there early days would bond them together as a tight unit, loyal to each other and to their dream. This would be essential in later years if they were to weather the storm of Beatlemania. This is the story of the smoky coffee bars, and art school dances, the endless rehearsals and numerous disappointments that paved the way for the world's most enduring love affair.
EPISODE THREE: Hamburg & Herr Epstein (1960 - 1962)
Sex drugs and rock'n'roll. In the 1960's four young lads from the port city of Liverpool found themselves in the biggest red-light district in Europe, with nothing to do but live out the ultimate music industry fantasy. The players in this story are a who's who of the seamier side of the early rock'n'roll era. The pimps, gangsters, strippers and early rockers who shared the nightime world of this city of sin, were all an integral part of this history of the world's most famous band. It was also the place that ultimately led them to the one person whose belief in their talents would be enough to make them a worldwide phenomenon, a Liverpool record store owner named Brian Epstein. The crucible of Hamburg was the proving ground where the Beatles honed their skills and became real musicians and the playground that would make them men.
EPISODE FOUR: Beatlemania (1963-1966)
"And now here they are, THE BEATLES!!!!"
With those words Ed Sullivan unleashed the greatest musical group in history upon citizens of North America. Within one short year the Fab Four had gone from being a strictly British pop group, to being a worldwide phenomenon. The world had never witnessed anything like the storm that engulfed the Beatles in those heady days, nor would it witness its like again. Beatlemania exploded on the world with such force that the Beatles themselves stopped being four simple lads from Liverpool and became legends.
EPISODE FIVE: Love, Litigation & Let It Be
When the Beatles stopped touring in 1966 many thought it was the end of the road for the lovable mop tops, but it was simply time for them to shift gears. The following years would be filled with an unmatched artistic growth that would transform them from a simple, albeit wildly successful pop group, into four of the most enduring icons of the twentieth century. The future would hold one of the saddest break-ups in music history and the stunning assassination of John Lennon a mere ten years later. It would see the tears flow once more, as George Harrison, beloved of millions, lost a battle with cancer, but it would also see legions of fans both old and new discovering and rediscovering the magic that was, is and always will be simply.The Beatles.
