Yesterday And Today - 3rd State - Stereo

THE BEATLES Yesterday And Today (1966 US first pressing 11-track stereo LP, textured 'Butcher cover' picture sleeve. This version is known as the third state as it has had the trunk picture slick perfectly peeled off to reveal the Butcher cover in its full glory. What makes this copy extremely special is that there were about 10% of the number of stereo copies sent out to the number of mono copies, so finding a stereo one at all is a very rare thing. Tracklisting & More Information

The Beatles' 'Yesterday & Today' album was released in the US by Capitol Records on June 15th 1966. The cover featured a highly controversial picture of the group dressed in white butcher smocks showing raw cuts of meat and parts of toy dolls strewn about their apperal.

The album was issued to radio stations and stores in advance of release and caused such an uproar that it was recalled.

As so many copies of the offensive cover had already been manufactured at great cost it was decided that rather than scrap these covers and reprint, a different picture slick showing the group around a luggage trunk would be printed and pasted over the offensive sleeve.

As news spread of the picture underneath people tried to peel off the new slick to reveal the picture underneath with varying success.

A 'Butcher' cover as issued by Capitol in its natural state is known as a first state copy. Mono copies in good condition fetch many thousands of dollars, regardless of condition, with stereo copies fetching much more, since there were ten times more mono than stereo copies produced.

A 'Butcher' cover with the trunk cover slick pasted over the top is known as a second state. If you look carefully at the white area on the right hand side of the sleeve, Ringo's black V-neck sweater can be seen through the replacement slick.

Lastly, a 'Butcher' sleeve with the trunk cover slick peeled off is known as a third state, like this one. It is very rare that a trunk cover slick can be removed without damaging the butcher picture underneath.

Very few copies were reportedly sold in stores with the cover in its first state, consequently a first state stereo copy in resonable condition will now cost the collector in excess of $10,000!

CONDITION

The labels are Capitol rainbow rim in design with clear bright text & 'MFD BY CAPITOL' text on the label black area inside the colourband border.

This copy is complete with the correct period 'Capitol 66' advertising inner and a copy of the recall letter as sent out by Ron Tepper from Capitol explaining the recall.

The vinyl is in very reasonable VG condition, & plays well with no heavy scratches as one might expect, only light hairline marks in a few areas. To replace the vinyl is an easy task as the same vinyl & pressings were used in the 'Trunk' cover version of this album, which is readily available. The stereo sleeve, however, with a textured 'Butcher' slick, is as rare as the Rocking Horse Doo Doo next to the Dragon eggs.

The all important front slick has been carefully peeled. There is a pin-hole to each corner from where it was once displayed & the bottom seam is split, along with hairline splits along the spine, the cover remains fully intact. There is very little wear that might upset the image as a whole. The image has retained its original texture & still has bright, clear colours. If the whole point of this is the front, then this, like the vinyl, isn't much of an issue either. The sleeve remains intact & the text on the back panel is clearly legible despite discolouring & the odd paper tear.
A worthwhile addition to any serious collection.
