Tracklisting & More Information

The Beatles Yesterday & Today album was released in the US by Capitol Records on June 15th 1966. The cover featured a highly controversial picture of the group dressed in white butcher smocks showing raw cuts of meat and parts of toy dolls strewn about their apparel.

The album was issued to radio stations and stores in advance of release and caused such an uproar that it was recalled.

As so many copies of the offensive cover had already been manufactured at great cost, it was decided that rather than scrap these covers and reprint, a different picture slick showing the group around a luggage trunk would be printed and pasted over the offensive sleeve.

As news spread of the picture underneath people tried to peel off the new slick to reveal the picture underneath with varying degrees of success.

A 'Butcher' cover as issued by Capitol in it's natural state is known as a first state copy. Mono copies in good condition fetch many thousands of dollars, regardless of condition, stereo copies fetch even more since there were twenty times more mono than stereo copies produced.

A 'Butcher' cover with the trunk cover slick pasted over the top is known as a second state. If you look carefully at the white area on the right hand side of the sleeve, Ringo's black v-neck sweater can be seen through the replacement slick.

Lastly, a 'Butcher' sleeve with the trunk cover slick peeled off is known as a third state. It is very rare that a trunk cover slick can be removed without damaging the 'Butcher' picture underneath.

Stereo copies are at least ten times as rare as the Mono copies, so to find one as nice as this is a real treat.

Very few copies were reportedly sold in stores with this cover in its first state and a first state stereo copy in resonable condition will now cost the collector in excess of $10,000!

CONDITION

Disc:

The labels are Capitol rainbow rim in design with clear bright text, no blemishes or excessive spindlemarks. Like all labels from this period, the rim is free of text with the 'Mfd. By Capitol Records' information appearing inside the rim on the black area of the label.

The vinyl remains in excellent condition with just a few light surface scuffs to show for its forty five years. Not that this is really much of an issue as the sleeve is far and away the most important part of this package with the vinyl being interchangeable with 'Trunk' sleeve copies.

The period Capitol inner advertising other artists on the label is included, as well as a copy of the recall letter as sent out in 1966.

Sleeve:

The all important picture sleeve is in wonderful condition. The front slick has been professionally peeled and it shows. There is nothing in the way of glue staining to be seen and no paper loss from the peeling process. The Butcher image on the front of the sleeve has retained its original texture. Just to let you know that you are indeed looking at a third state and not an impossibly rare first state is the tiniest amount of yellowing on parts of the back caused by the chemicals used in the peeling process & small pinpoints of glue residue left behind from the peeling process.

There is a four inch split to the bottom seam at the opening, but the other seams are intact and the spine print remains clearly legible. Only very minor corner & edge scuffing is evident. The number "5" is printed in the bottom left hand corner of the back of the sleeve.

If your budget won't stretch to $10,000+ for a first state stereo copy, this would make a suitable, more affordable option. An investment grade item or worthwhile addition to a serious collection!
