ERNEST ANSERMET conducting L'ORCHESTRE DE LA SUISSE ROMANDE Beethoven Ninth (Rare 1961 UK 5-track STEREO LP, also featuring JOAN SUTHERLAND - Soprano, NORMA PROCTER - Contralto, ANTON DERMOTA - Tenor & ARNOLD VAN MILL - Bass. The wonderful ninth Symphony in D Minor, otherwise known as the Choral Symphony, is one of the most evocative orchestral pieces ever performed. The Symphony was completed in 1823 & actually commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, even though it was dedicated to the King Of Prussia & first performed in Vienna! The melding of Schiller's 'Ode To Joy' with the climactic fourth movement has since become one of the most familiar orchestral/choral pieces of our time. This incredibly early UK stereo LP still has the original FFSS Decca inner, with the vinyl showing just a couple of light hairlines. The front laminated flipback picture sleeve too is in great condition with just a little age yellowing to the edges to show for nearly fifty years 'in the wild' - a wonderful copy! SXL2274)
