However, it was the talented Mr. Greenbaum who first topped the charts with the song in 1970. The atmospheric production focussed attention on an American singer, who was also a prolific writer, as this fascinating collection reveals, with pride of place going to 'Spirit In The Sky', with the immortal line: 'When I die and they lay me to rest, gonna go to the place that's the best…goin' up to the Spirit in the sky.' Norman devised dozens more atmospheric songs, mostly celebrating his rural life style, and you can now enjoy all these great songs, freshly remastered and sounding great on this comprehensive compilation.
