MUSSORGSKY Khovanshchina (1955 UK Decca Orange and Gold label mono vinyl 4-LP set. Performed by Nicholas Tzveych, Alexander Marinkovich, Drago Startz and Melanie Bugarinovish with the Chorus and Orchestra of the National Opera, Belgrade conductedby Kreshimir Baranovich. Like much of his work Mussorgsky's second Opera was unfinished at the time of his death, and was controversially completed by Rimsky-Korsakov. Largely ignored before the 1913, the piece's revolutionary flavour madeit a standard piece of repertory work in Communist Russia. This copy is presented in an attractive textured book opening record book, with the four discs in colourful laminated flipback sleeves and all but one of the orginal grease paper inners within. All of the discs and the sleeves are in stunning mint condition and the vinyl is the kind of meaty, heavyweight pressing so typical of the 50's. Whilst Khovanshina is not as well known as Boris Godunov, it is arguably the more accessable Opera, and this could be the perfect way to enjoy Mussorgsky's historical epic! LXT5045-8)
