Down And Out Blues - 1st

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON Down & Out Blues (It is with great pleasure that we offer this record for the first time. The debut 1959 US original 12-track deep groove mono LP on the black & silver Checker label, now firmly placed in the Blues 'Hall Of Fame'. It includes the early Checker singles, Don't Start Me To Talkin' [Sonny's classic first recording] & Dissatisfied, with backing from the likes of Muddy Waters, Otis Spann & Willie Dixon. We think you might need this one! With Don Bronstein's sombre photography of a disheveled homeless man on the cover, Sonny died just six years after its release. Obtained from a one previous owner collection of original blues, R&B, & early rock treasures, this copy is only just now seeing the light of day.

The heavy duty pasted picture sleeve sports the usual signs of vintage for a US LP jacket. There is some scuffing & a few small areas of paper loss around a few edges, however, all text is clearly legible, especially along the spine. The back cover remains a nice off white & the rear panel even retains a historic '50/-' price sticker. Easily a nice VG copy. US fifties originals rarely find their way to us!

As mentioned, this low mileage copy has seen little action. The wax still sparkles & there are only minor spindle marks by the centre hole to indicate play. The matrices are hand scratched in the dead wax & there are no blemishes that might upset the label print.

The vinyl has been play tested, & what a great record it is. It plays a strong VG/VG+ with only minor surface creeping in at times, which is minimal. There are just a few light paper scuffs & the odd tiny scratch which can't be felt. Amazing considering it's over half a century old! A really nice original & easily a Very Good condition copy, priced accordingly.

Highly recommended
