THROBBING GRISTLE Music From The Death Factory (Super, super
rare & limited 1980 UK vintage 23.5" x 16.5" concert poster, printed
on thick white paper stock in foreboding black & white. This incredible
find is the first of its kind here at EIL. It has been stored flat since it
was made & dates from December 1980. We know this as this
particular example is historically annotated with the venue & date in
blue pen in large lettering top & bottom ['4 Dec - Rafters'] - & it looks
like it was a pretty uncompromising gig! The concert that night was
filmed, as there were both cassette & VHS releases made. The
terrifying image on the poster is of an unspecified Nazi death camp, &
we can confirm that it was the first official TG poster, with 'death
camp' being the name of the band's studio in Hackney, situated near
the plague burial pits in London Fields. It was also the title of one of
their first cassette only releases in 1976. This particular poster was
made in very small quantities, printed exclusively by Walker Prints, &
their London printers name & telephone number can be seen bottom
right. We know that Rafters was a club that opened in the early '70s &
quickly became synonymous with live bands when punk took off in
1976 [incidentally, Rob Gretton, New Order's manager, was the DJ
there, & it also operated a jazz/funk/soul night [20 Jazz Funk Greats,
mr DJ?]]. The poster remains in Excellent condition, having been
stored correctly & away from direct sunlight for decades it would
seem. On close inspection, the poster remains a nice off white, & you
can see some ever so faint wear over the years to a few edges but
very minor. If there was ever a forthcoming TG/Industrial exhibition,
you would want this poster to be there! One for the serious
collector...)
