Tracklisting & More Information

The Bob Dylan Bootleg Tapes

This show was recorded for the Westwood One Radio network in Los Angeles and was syndicated to radio stations throughout the USA. It was broadcast on 13th May 1991.

The show was largely publicity for the Bootleg Series and featured many tracks from those albums. More importantly it contains an interview with Bob Dylan conducted by Elliot Mintz in a Los Angeles hotel several weeks prior to the compilation of the show (probably between the Mexican tour dates in March and the short North American tour in May 1991). Careful listening to the interview has revealed that some of the material is from a previous Westwood One show “Dylan on Dylan” broadcast in 1984. While in the 1984 interview Dylan was, for him, very forthcoming, the interview with Mintz finds Dylan somewhat less co-operative at times. The finished show combines both. For purists Dylan strums a few chords, Mintz asks “What are you playing ?” - Dylan's answer includes the words “ A six string guitar” ! The interview ends with Mintz struggling, at length to elicit a message from Dylan for the 11 million listening to the show. The reply ? “Don't forget to look over their shoulder, something might be coming …… like a train”. This show is a rare and fascinating insight into a man often beyond reach.
