Strawberry Music Sampler No. 1

THE STRAWBS Strawberry Music Sampler No. 1 (With only 99 copies originally pressed [99 was the UK tax ceiling] and, according to The Strawbs' website, only two copies known to exist, this has to be one of the rarest records on the planet. Original 1969 UK 17-track white title label Music Publishing Sampler LP, privately pressed & designed to get other artists to cover Cousins' and Hooper's songs. Its importance for Strawbs fans is that it includes all the tracks culled from the firstversion of the group's first album, as well as a few other demos and early versions. It was produced between the first Strawbs album and Dragonfly)

Tracklisting & More Information

Dave Cousins has a copy & one other became available at auction, so we believe there to be at least three copies including this one. Even the most optimistic estimates of surviving copies is less than ten, making this one of the rarest records on the planet.

3. Sail Away To The Sea (Cousins)
4. Two Weeks Last Summer (Cousins)
5. Nothing Else Will Do (Cousins)
6. Who Knows Where The Time Goes (Denny)

what makes this record particularly interesting to Strawbs fans is that it contains exclusive previously un-released out takes from the abandoned first Strawbs album.

Tony Hooper, vocals, guitars;

THE DISC

Sleeve :-

The sleeve is in amazing condition considering that it is just plain white, of thin construction with red titling.
So good, in fact, that the indentations made by the printing press are still easily felt.
The sleeve itself is a matte flipback with a plain white cover with red printing setting out the tracks, writers, and Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper's contact details at the bottom.
Given its flimsy nature & whiteness, there is very little discolouration & no heavy creases.
There is a 5" split at the centre of the bottom seam & the beginnings of a small split at the top caused by vinyl shift over the years. From this it would seem to indicate that the album has been stored upright with the inner paper sleeve upside down.

Labels :-

A simple white label with STRAWBERRY MUSIC at the top & track details beneath.

Vinyl :-

The record is pressed on high quality heavyweight vinyl with scratched matrices of simply 1-A & 1-B.
The playing area is in amazing NEAR MINT condition with just a couple of light hairline marks to show it has ever been removed from the sleeve. These could well have been caused by the original paper inner as the vinyl shifted to create the split at the bottom of the sleeve. Either way, to have survived at all is a miracle & to have survived in this good condition it must have been under the shadow of its own guardian angel.

A miracle copy of one of the rarest vinyl LPs in the world - 'nuff said.
