MERCURY REV The Complete Peel Sessions (2009 UK 20-track 2-CD album set - Mercury Rev arrived on the scene in 1991 with a blistering revved up art punk rock debut 'Yerself is Steam' which is, without doubt, one of the finest debuts of the '90s. The band treated a session for John Peel as one of the most important things they'd ever done; Jonathon Donahue said 'we took it so seriously, it was like we were doing an audition for some huge mogul like Clive Davis'. The band spent over 20 hours on their first session, creating unique versions of 4 tracks from the album, with 'Frittering' & 'Chasin' A Bee' stand out as highlights from this session. 1993 & 1995 saw the band record 2 more sessions for John which included a cover of 'I Only Have Eyes For You'. In 1999, the band returned to promote 'Deserter's Songs', recording a 10 minute version of 'The Funny Bird' / 'Tonite It Shows', alongside covers of Lennon's 'I Don't Wanna Die and Beefheart's 'Observatory Crest'. The band recorded what turned out to be their final session for John in 2001. It included a cover of Black Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan' alongside 6 other live versions of tracks from 'All Is Dream'. Complete with a picture booklet containing sleevenotes by Jonathon Donahue, recalling his relationship with John Peel and what it was like to record one of the legendary 'Peel Sessions')
