La Ciapa Rusa ['The Red Patch' in dialect] is committed to the preservation of northern Italian traditional music. Founded by hurdy-gurdy, dulcimer, psaltery player and vocalist Maurizio Martinotti and two-row melodeon player and vocalist Beppe Greppi, the group combines traditional instruments, including the hurdy-gurdy, psaltery and piffero [a double-reed wind instrument] and modern instruments including electronic keyboards, sequencers, samplers and drum machines. This one of the seminal folk groups of the renaissance of traditional music in Piedmont and also in Italy, representing a reference point in the evolution of Northern Italian folk music.
