MALAGASY & GILSON At Newport-Paris (Archive Quality Ethnic Jazz 1973 French-only private press 9-track vinyl LP on Jef Gilson's own Palm label, recorded in a St-Germain-des-Prés nightclub with musicians from Antananarivo. In the late sixties, Jef's musical explorations led him to the ex-French colony of Madagascar, the island just off the south eastern coast of Africa. Re-released by Jazzman Records in recent years, the album documents an incredible ethno-jazz sound as & when it was released, with instruments including the valiha [a Madagascan harp on bambo], the ondioline and exotic percussion mixed with modal jazz! Recently acquired from a private dealer in Paris, here we have a stunning archive copy from the vaults, complete with original four-page 'Palm Journal' press release in French. The front laminated picture sleeve is Near Mint with merely the lightest evidence of natural age wear and the vinyl remains in near 'as new' condition - Recommended! PALM5)
