Condition :-

What better place to start than with the cover. Worthy of framing alone, this sleeve depicts a piece that was commissioned by Blue Note by Reid Miles from an illustration designed by a young Andy Warhol. It is a highly expressive study of Kenny in mid-play, one of the early examples of Warhol's work, rounded off with his flowing facsimile signature at the bottom.

Obtained from the prize collection of one very keen Jazz fan, with all records bought from new back in the day, this is the first time we have obtained this extreme rarity.
Condition wise, the sleeve is still a vivid black on white, with the deliberate use of white space to reflect Kenny's style having lost none of its impact. There are no blemishes that stand in its way. Due to its sturdy manufacture it remains in outstanding condition. There is some historic tape reinforcement at each corner from past ownership, & no splits. The rigid card has left no creasing & both panels are clean with just some very faint discolouring for its vintage & no tears or writing. The spine is lovely & all text is clearly readable. It has survived over half a century to tell its story with grace.

The heavyweight vinyl has flat edges & clearly reveals the 'RVG' [Rudy Van Gelder] as a pre-stamper etching in the run-offs both sides. In addition to the 'ear' etchings & catalogue/matrix details, there is a 'deep groove' present both sides of the label & no 'r' in the 'Blue Note' label lettering, indicating a pre-trademark pressing. In other words, this is the earliest & the best for audiophile Blue Note collectors.
The labels reveal some spindle marks by the centre hole to indicate past action on the turntable, with no blemishes to upset the print. The tax import stickers for the UK are present both sides & highlight its history.

The vinyl has received a deep cleanse on a top of the range Matrix machine. We have play tested both sides & by golly, does it sound BIG. Many subsequent pressings of this album in the original mono tended to sound thin. A class example of Rudy Van Gelder technology & a great performance.

The vinyl appears super clean with no scratches or marks, maybe just a couple of ultra faint paper scuffs to be pedantic. These have no effect on play. With a survivng sleeve fully intact with just some tape at the corners, we would grade the vinyl a healthy VG+/EX-, thus completing a beautiful package overall.

Highly recommended.
