Tracklisting & More Information

Background

This was the first Beatles album released in America, with the version two of the album very quickly following version one into the shops. The reason for the two versions of the album was that Beechwood Music took out an injunction against Vee-Jay because they didn't have the rights to issue the tracks that had previously appeared on the 'Love Me Do' single. Vee-Jay consequently had to re-tool the album to remove the offending two tracks, which were replaced by 'Please Please Me' and 'Ask Me Why'.
As it turned out, this was probably a better track selection for the album anyway.
This change was executed in January 1964 & the 'Version Two' album was back in the shops by the 10th of February. In the end, this album eventually sold 1.3 million of the Mono & nearly 42,000 of the Stereo LP versions. Sales of the 'Version One' amounted to 79,000 Mono & 1,000 Stereo. It can be seen at a glance that the ratio of Stereo to Mono was still very small, even in the United States.

Specifics:
The labels are all black 'deep groove' with silver text. The design is block with title and band name above the centre hole and SIDE all in caps. There are very few spindlemarks around the centrehole, indicating little or careful play.

The catalogue number is handscratched in the dead vinyl. Under close scrutiny the circled 'MR' logo is visible on side two, however for whatever reason, someone at the pressing plant has tried to scratch this mastering stamp out, but if you look carefully, the circle and 'MR' can be made out. This means that this LP was probably pressed at Columbia.

The sleeve is back pasted in design with the tracklisting on the rear in two columns & no number. There are 1/4 inner flaps, George's shadow on the front and no dots on the back with clear printing of HONEY and a comma in PLEASE, PLEASE ME.
In other words, this is not a counterfeit.

Condition:

The sleeve has stood up to the last fifty six years relatively well and has obviously been well looked after. There is the inevitable degree of edge scuffing and small splits at the opening along the top and bottom seam but general shelfwear is pretty light. There is a small tape repair to the split at the top seam which is more noticable on the back as the tape has yellowed with age.
All in all a very presentable sleeve without the more usual devastation that is so often found on originals.

The vinyl remains in VG+/EX- condition. It has obviously been played but has been well looked after with just light scuffs visible upon close inspection, most of these being the hairline paper scuff variety and has no obvious major defects.
