Tracklisting: When Philip Selway approached some of his favourite musicians to play on his third solo record he said he imagined it as a Carole King record if she collaborated with the pioneering electronic composer Daphne Oram and invited him to drum on it. Unsurprisingly they were all sold, and so began the bringing together of an extraordinary number of gifted people, including Hannah Peel, Adrian Utley, Quinta, Marta Salogni, Valentina Magaletti and Laura Moody. Foregrounding this remarkable union of musical voices was 10 songs written by Selway at home on piano and guitar that show him at the height of his songwriting powers. As Strange Dance unfurls, it takes the listener through different weathers and seasons. Each song carries varied and diverse shades and textures of emotion. Lyrically, it is artful. Selway has a gift at writing heartfelt lyrics which could relate to any number of human experiences. Alongside the standard release, the album will receive a deluxe edition for vinyl containing a second LP called Liminal, consisting of pieces Selway composed for the film Carmilla and the BBC Radio 3 play Sea Longing, alongside additional prints by Geddes.[3] Side 1: A1. Little Things 3:35 A2. What Keeps You Awake At Night 6:57 A3. Check For Signs Of Life 4:22 A4. Picking Up Pieces 4:28 A5. The Other Side 4:11 Side 2: B1. Strange Dance 5:57 B2. Let Me Go (Live For Eid Celebration) 3:10
PHILIP SELWAY Familial (2010 UK 10-track CD album - 'Familial' is a collection of sublimely fragile, haunting and heartfelt songs that will surprise many, and not only because drummers traditionally don't do this kind of thing. It is so persuasively good, it sounds like Selway has always been a singer-songwriter. The seeds of Selway's solo album were planted back in 2001 when Neil Finn organised an impromptu gathering of talent, including Johnny Marr, Eddie Vedder, Lisa Germano, former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg and Radiohead's Ed O'Brien and Selway, in aid of charity, which resulted in the '7 Worlds Collide' album. Philip then invited Germano, Steinberg, Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone to come and make the record with him. Yet despite the rock pedigree on show, 'Familial' is as far from a rock record as you'll get. But neither are its ballads defined by folk, but something much wider and more contemporary. Curiously, there's very little defined drums on the record, with more percussive loops/textures. Sometimes the beats and instrumental colours are so subtle, it sounds like the acoustic air in the room is setting the mood. It leaves space for the lyrics, which clearly come from the most intimate of places. Includes the single 'By Some Miracle')

Tracklisting: 1. By Some Miracle 2. Beyond Reason 3. A Simple Life 4. All Eyes On You 5. The Ties That Bind Us 6. Patron Saint 7. Falling 8. Broken Promises 9. Don't Look Down 10.The Witching Hour
