A FEW OF THE ITEMS WE WANT...
| THE OPEN MIND The Open Mind (As the tick-tock-ticking of the
cursed clock shakes you from your slumber, the gods of war are still
doing battle in your frontal lobes. It was a good night, not that you can
remember much of it. You remember that song though, Magic Potion
by The Open Mind. A fine psychedelic outfit from sunny Putney. With
that in mind, it's time to go to the shops to pick up a copy of their
album, before you forget what they were called. Sadly, many forgot to
do just that, and the one and only album by The Open Mind
disappeared pretty much without trace. What we have here is a copy
of that incredibly rare 1969 twelve track stereo LP, complete with '069'
dated poly lined inner and fully laminated picture sleeve. What you
really need to know is what sort of state this near mythical LP has
survived in, don't you ? Well, read on ...)
Tracklisting: The Sleeve
Apart from a small area of paper loss to the bottom left corner of the back, this has passed the intervening forty five years fairly well. There is a little laminate lift at the spine, a few light creases in places and some scuffing to the corners and that's about it. The colours of the front still remain sharp and clear and the white of the back shows only the lightest hint of age yellowing at the edges and remains mostly white. There is the suggestion of the beginnings of a sleeve split to the middle of the top seam, but that may have been there in 1969 too. The spine is unworn and clearly readable.
The Vinyl
This is the part of the LP story where things normally fall down to Earth with a thump. When these extremely hard to find albums do turn up, they are often very dog-eared in appearance, with vinyl that looks like a dog has actually chewed upon it and spat it out.
This copy, however, comes as a pleasant surprise !
I won't say it's Mint, because like any that you'll ever come across, it isn't. Don't hold that against it though.
To look at, you will notice several light hairlines, with one or two not so light.
That said, there are few evident spindlemarks around the centre hole and the vinyl retains its sheen without any of the nasty white scorings that are evidence of previous too heavy tone arms or damaged stylii.
Nothing that we could really do in the end but play the thing, so we did.
Both side one and two ended up sounding similar, so what follows would accurately describe both.
The first thing that you will notice is that 'Magic Potion' is not included. The full tracklisting is as follows:
01 Dear Louise
02 Try Another Day
03 I Feel The Same Way Too
04 My Mind Cries
05 Can't You See
06 Thor The Thunder God
07 Horses And Chariots
08 Before My Time
09 Free As The Breeze
10 Girl, I'm So Alone
11 Soul And My Will
12 Falling Again
A band that fell somewhere between The Pretties, The Yardbirds and The Beatles, the music probably got recorded and released a couple of years too late. Much the same fate as befell S.F. Sorrow & Odyssey And Oracle. The result of this was less exposure, less radio play & less promotion than all of these classics deserved. This album particularly suffered from very low sales and has consequently become nearly impossible to find.
The music itself, if you are familiar with the CD releases, will come across as richer, with more bass and clearly defined highs & lows. There does not appear to be much at all in the way of groove wear, with the album remaining crystal clear right to the end of each side. The last tracks, so often the barometer of a poor system, show very little burring of any kind and remain as refreshing sounding today as they would have been in 1969.
There is a small amount of background noise evident in quiet passages, but this is far from obtrusive and in no way detracts from the sonic fidelity of the recordings.
You remember those surface hairlines I told you about earlier ? Well, during play most were found to be inaudible, with just a few 'pops' in places. The record does not jump or produce any recurring sequence of clicks of any note.
As I have already said, it is not mint and we would not describe it as such, but we have yet to come across a copy that is much better than this in terms of what you actually get falling out of your speakers and crawling across the floor towards you.
When listening, your ears will find themselves ignoring what tiny amount of surface noise is present and instead will take in the fullness of sound that only quality sixties vinyl & the latest audiophile pressings will give you.
If you are offended by the occasional click, then perhaps you should look elsewhere, but if you want a mighty fine copy of this near mythical LP release that hasn't been either played to death or scratched to hell and back, you will be waiting a very long time indeed to find a copy to better this one.
This is a gem that deserves a good home. Only those most worthy need apply. | | THE OPEN MIND The Open Mind (Limited Edition 2018 UK issue of the

QUALITY original stock copy 1969 UK 7" vinyl single with large
centre and in mono only, backed with 'Cast A Spell' and
complete with its authentic Philips die-cut company paper
sleeve. One of the true garage-psych masterpieces of the late
60s! See 'more info' for condition... BF1805)
Tracklisting: 'Magic Potion' is one of the snarliest psych-rock singles to come from these shores, and quite rightly warrants its reputation for being a deadly and killer single of the mod era. It's certainly one of the best. Compiled left right and centre on any number of sixties psych comps, nothing can compare to the full force of the sound on this molten original.
Naturally, only one or two clued up acid heads bought the single, and actually the demo copy is the easier find, although both rarer than a hippy-in-the-wash; this incredible STOCK COPY is the toughest and soon to be crown jewel in your singles collection.
Condition:
The die-cut sleeve still holds up superbly with no rips or tears and minimal edge creasing.
The vinyl is graded as Near Mint - a final upgrade copy. You won't we be disappointed with this one... | | THE OPEN MIND Magic Potion (Legendary 1969 UK wide centred 'A'
