B7 The First Day | | THE UNTHANKS Last (2011 UK 11-track CD album - The Mercury
nominated 2007 album 'The Bairns' was the only British folk album
both in the The Guardian and Uncut's best albums of the decade. If
there is only one this next decade, it could be 'Last'. Without doubt the
most confident and important Unthanks album to date. 'Last' was
made predominantly at the snowed-under Northumberland farmhouse
that is home of Rachel and Adrian. Having made the highly successful
'Here's The Tender Coming'in a studio, the return to home recording
might have signaled a move back to the intimacy of their earlier work,
but in practice, 'Last' takes on the epic hallmarks of a masterpiece, in
terms of the scale and atmosphere of the setting. It is a sound and
scale that like 'Felton Lonin' from 'The Bairns', evokes the atmosphere
of the landscape of Tyneside and Northumberland; the relationship
anomaly between the bleak starkness and beauty of it's open spaces,
between the peaceful landscape that is given an eerie quality by it's
bloody and then industrial past)
Tracklisting: 1. Gan To The Kye
2. The Gallowgate Lad
3. Queen Of Hearts

5. Give Away Your Heart

11. Last [Reprise] | | THE UNTHANKS Here's The Tender Coming (2009 UK 13-track CD
album - Geordie folk inventors Rachel Unthank & The Winterset are
back with a name tweak [The Unthanks], revised line-up and a new
album. Following on from their Mercury Prize nominationfor 2007's
'The Bairns', the new album and line-up adds strings, horns and most
arrestingly of all, drums and percussion for a much more developed,
layered sound this time around. 'Here's The Tender Coming' is the
usual Unthank mix of traditional songs, self-penned and songs written
in the folk idiom - many imaginatively borrowed from writers little
known outside the folk world and mostly from the North East of
England. Yet this is not just folk - in 'Annachie Gordon' there are
overtones of Steve Reich counterpoint, and the Beach Boys / Fleet
Foxes playful harmony in opener 'Because He Was A Bonnie Lad'.
There are even shades of Antony & The Johnsons in the opening to
'Flowers of the Town' or the quietly shambolic eccentricity of Robert
Wyatt in 'Living By The Water', and in 'Lucky Gilchrist' the playful joy
of Sufjan Stevens. This is an album of depth and joy and the critics
are already lining up to praise it)
