12-track vinyl LP on the small 'swirl' Vertigo label [the original design],
with machine stamped 1Y/1 & 2Y/1 matrices in the run-outs. Comes
housed in an elaborate fold-out cover whichopens into six panels,
from which the top panels left & right are die-cut, & the front panel
has a stunnning lenticular patterned effect best seen in the flesh. This
copy comes complete with the original die-cut 'swirl' inner bag. See
'more info' for further details...)
Tracklisting: BACKGROUND
Cult Folk-rock group from the early 1970’s released on the famous Vertigo “swirl” label with a stunning fold-out artwork. Hints of pastoral folk rock with also a resemblance close to the sound of Fotheringay.
Full of hippy ideals, this singing guitar trio (Ann Steuart also plays piano and flute) gets some help from other horn musicians and a string section and most of all, the participation of giant double-bass master Danny Thompson (of Pentangle, John Martyn and Tim Buckley fame) even if he stays more discreet on this album than in others. The music stays completely acoustic (except for the odd electric guitar on one superb track - The Lady Is Changing Home), and sometimes also instrumental (Madeline) displaying a certain kind of virtuosity that every proghead will love.
The sound quality of the recording is excellent with hints of naïve and sweet approachs to the songwriting. The medieval elements are mostly focused to instrumental song “Madeline”, and to the wonderful “Willow Tree”, with psychedelic elements.
CONDITION
This copy has been cherished by its original owner and well-preserved. The sleeve is graded as Very Good. The reverse shows light discolouration with two darker spots, but nothing to marr the psychedelic majesty of the black & white image. The edges show light scuffing leaving the text on the spine legible. The fold-out flaps are still clean & sharp with the lenticular design nicely preserved. The interior image has just a few light spots of foxing, but nothing which takes away from the overall feel. The front has light scuffing around the edges with a few light spots of discolouration, however nothing which really detracts from the lenticular effect and the opening edge has become just a little weakened through use. The sleeve is free from writing, seam splits or tears. The inner shows just a little age yellowing. All in all a very handsome example.
The disc is graded as Very Good + and has been professionally cleaned on a Matrix machine & play tested. There is just a little surface noise at the start of each run-in groove, barely perceptible, as to be expected, but this settles quickly. The vinyl plays through with no distortion & just a little ambient surface noise on occasion which doesn't detract from the melodies showcased. The label displays moderate spindle wear, but nothing excessive. The vinyl itself has light paper scuffing, most likely due to the record being taken in & out of the sleeve. There is a light hairline across Forest & I See A Man, which has little impact on play. Whilst not a Mint copy, this is very respectable copy of a psych-folk classic and Vertigo essential.

CONDITION
This archive example is a joy to look at & a prize item for any Vertigo collector. The sleeve must grade Excellent & has a vintage French shop sticker on the front left untouched. The edges are Near Mint & all text is clearly legible, with a Near Mint spine that would stand proud on any collector's shelf. The inside die-cut sections show no signs of wear. There is a tiny sticker tear to the inside right panel which does very little to betray its beauty.
The vinyl is Near Mint with minimal evidence of play, which is staggering considering its forty-seven years of age. About as good as it gets!
