The Smashing Pumpkins became the model for alternative rock success, they knew how to play the game, signing to a major-subsidized indie for underground credibility and moving to the major in time to make the group a multi-platinum act. 'Siamese Dream', which was embraced by critics upon its release and established the group as stars. 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' became an even bigger hit than any of its predecessors, going on to sell over four million copies in the U.S. alone. They continued to release albums to both critical and commercially acclaim for the rest of the decade until they decided to call it a day in 1998. The band members all went their separate ways and moved into their own solo projects.
