Tracklisting & More Information

The second Genesis Publications Rolling Stones related title, published in 1995 and became out-of-print soon after appearing.

From 1965-67, Gered Mankowitz was the photographer, friend and travelling companion of The Rolling Stones. Throughout this time, he captured unique and breathtaking images of the band at work and at play. His photograph for the cover of the Stones' recording Between The Buttons is regarded by many as one of the most memorable album covers of all time.

For those two years Gered's relationship with the Stones flourished and he had unrivalled access to the band's concerts, recording sessions and hotel rooms. However, by 1967 Gered was becoming very much in demand and had begun to work with a host of other clients, most famously Jimi Hendrix. The Stones had moved on as well; by then it was obvious that they were to be a lasting phenomenon, destined to become the great rock'n'roll band that they remain to this day. Over the next year or so, despite maintaining a close friendship with the band members, Gered worked less and less with the Stones whilst they turned increasingly to the photographic services of Michael Cooper, Dominique Tarlé and Michael Putland, all of whose works Genesis has already documented.
In preparing for the publication of Mason's Yard to Primrose Hill, Gered individually proofed and examined the three and a half thousand frames carefully stored in his own personal archive, an experience which he described as being 'like viewing much of my work for the very first time'. In the process he rediscovered images he had long since forgotten, including many rare and unpublished colour pictures.

'The edition was limited to 1,750 signed copies in black quarter leather with silk-screened slipcase. An original 3-frame contact strip direct from the negative is pasted into each copy. Gered travelled to Australia for promotion to coincide with the Stones' tour.
