Sonic Attack + Cloth Bag

HAWKWIND Sonic Attack (Legendary 1973 highly desirable single sided promotional-only vinyl 7" in the original red titled cloth canvas bag. The most famous and most bootlegged Hawkwind collectable, this is the track taken from the Space Ritualalbum, featuring Robert Calvert reciting Mike Moorcock's 'Public Information Film' apocalyptic rant. A small number were sent to record stations in the UK at the time - this is an original with the 'WD 3637' catalogue number machine stamped inthe run-out & a thin transparent plastic sheen to the label, which is another main identifier for it being the real deal. See 'more info' for further details on this incredible rarity... WD3637)

Tracklisting & More Information

Tracklisting :-

Sonic Attack 2:54

This incredibly rare disc was only ever distributed in very limited quantities to promote what was anticipated to be the follow up single to Silver Machine, but they went with Urban Guerilla instead.

This was issued in May 1973, the same month as the German Amon Duul 'remix' of Lord Of Light / Born To Go. Whatever the reasons, it wasn't released & Urban Guerilla came out in July instead, only to be withdrawn shortly thereafter. This signalled the end of Hawkwind as a Top Of The Pops contender, luckily, and they were able to progress from here on without the need for chart compromise [although it still beats me why The Psychedelic Warlords & Kings Of Speed failed to chart!].

On to the facts.

The A side label has simply 'Sonic Attack' & Hawkwind in block black lettering. The B side label is plain black.
Those of you with very good eyesight will notice the Liberty / United Artists copyright information around the perimeter of the label from about 10 O'clock to 3 O'clock with writing credit for Michael Moorcock.

For some reason the play side labels were all laminated. There is the very slight beginnings of laminate peel to the edge & no concerns.

The run-out is machine stamped with the matrix/catalogue number 'WD3637' & the 'KT' tax code can also be seen in the runoff area.

The track itself fades both in & out, so instead of the crunching intro chords to Time We Left, you get the runout groove.

The one-sided vinyl could be graded EX- as there are just a few faint cosmetic surface scuffs, as any Hawkwind record from this period might show, & playback is superb.

The cloth bag, similar to coin or mail bag material, is made from light canvas & is reinforce stitched at the opening. The same block lettering is used on the bag, only bigger & in red. I don't know how, but it has managed to survive the years without picking up any significant stains, burn holes or rips ! Some very light foxing through the years is evident & this is certainly a great example.

Next to Hurry On Sundown, this is the other great 'I've heard of it but never seen one' item & as a long time Hawkwind fan! To finally get to see one in this good condition, especially considering the period of Hawkwind it was issued in, is a real treat.

If you've been looking for this, look no further as this is the copy to have - it's lovely.
