Tracklisting & More Information

This copy is the third UK label variant of the first Stones Mono LP. Decca employees freely admit that there were multiple typesetters of the labels and they tended to keep the sleeves in a pile, so the combination of sleeve & label is a far from exact science, with many different variations turning up. In reality, it is still a second press with the modified master that plays the full 4:06 version of 'Tell Me'. The next material difference came in 1965 when the labels dropped the 'Recording First Published' text & just had 'P 1964'.

The label lists the 'Reed' credit for 'Honest I Do' as well as listing 'I Need You Baby' instead of 'Mona'. It also has the 'Recording First Published' text, dating this press to 1964.

Side 1 matrix XARL 6271-2A
Side 2 matrix XARL 6272-4A

The sleeve is front laminated and features the dark moody image that has become iconic with the band, also printed on the back with 'I Need You Baby' instead of 'Mona'.

Condition:
Sleeve - The cover remains in very respectable condition. There is a little general creasing to the laminate. The unlaminated rear shows some age yellowing but nothing excessive. A very presentable example.

Labels - The labels are deep red with bright silver print. The previous owner has written his name on the Side 1 label and there is a small sticker mark. There are spindle marks around the centre hole to indicate a reasonable amount of play.

Vinyl - The disc has been professionally cleaned & has come up looking very reasonable, with just a few light scuffs & surface hairlines evident which do not affect play. The disc plays through without fault, although a degree of background noise is evident in quieter passages. Burring is low, even on the last tracks of the disc.
The cut was designed for a slightly wider stylus than the modern elliptical, but a mono setting on your amplifier will pretty much negate the effect of hearing stereo background noise against a single mono source.

This was an album recorded in mono & designed to be listened to in mono. You will notice a lot more bottom end punch compared to the comb filtered 'Re-processed for Stereo' versions and a lot more clarity and definition.

This copy is certainly not mint, far from it, but it is also a very long way from retirement. An acceptable copy of this hard to find pressing in authentic 'vintage' condition at a very advantageous price.
