JAMES BROWN The Payback (Totally bad-to-the-bone 1973 US 8-track double LP on the second label variant without James Brown's head, but still with 'Sterling' machine stamped in the runouts, pasted gatefold picture sleeve. The Payback was originally scheduled as the soundtrack to the blaxploitation movie Hell Up In Harlem, but was bizarrely rejected by the director as 'not James Brown enough'. Obviously that man had cloth ears, as this is now considered a high point in JB's career and a landmark funk album, featuring cyclical grooves and jamming with edges of softer blues creeping in. The sleeve shows some light shelfwear with a little fading at the edges but the vinyl remains excellent with just a few light surface scuffs to show for its forty years PD2-3007)
