THE JELLIES Jive Baby On A Saturday Night (Autographed 1981 UK-only private press 7" vinyl single, also featuring 'The Conversation'. If you collect obscure DIY recordings & unexpected indie-dance songs from the era, how's about this highly treasured and sought after post-punk / mutant disco oddity from the UK! Sounding like a lo-fi version of Tom Tom Club but hailing from Cambridge, England [recorded at the legendary Spaceward Studios], it's also an EXTREMELY rare 7", selling as low as just 30 copies. Apparently Richard Lewis of The Jellies brought thirty copies down to the Rough Trade shop in Notting Hill on the day of release and that was it. The Jellies were never seen or heard again. The few sold copies that did make their way to the States decades later all came from that original source, allowing the likes of Thurston Moore & WFMU to discover its lo-fi charms. Several clued-in British DJs over the years such as Optimo & Jonny Trunk started to add it to their record box [only John Peel spun it back in the day!] and it was eventually re-released by Trunk Records. That doesn't leave many ORIGINAL copies left in circulation... If you start digging deep on the net, don't be fooled by the tiny amount of auction results that might appear for this painfully rare record [we noticed they mostly all seem to be the 90s bootleg version!], this one is the real deal. Obtained from a private collection of punk 45 rarities, all bought from the years 1980-81, the record is replete with solid centre and a unique die-cut title sleeve which is SIGNED on the back by two band members including Richard Lewis in black biro. It's 100% first press. As a collector, you can tell this is a vintage 1981 release by the feel of the original paper stock and more easily by the original 'flipbacks' on the rear which are missing from the 90s re-release. What's more, both the sleeve and vinyl appear Near Mint with few signs of wear & play. Just when you thought you'd seen them all, along come The Jellies! JELI1)
