DONALD BYRD Byrd's Eye View (Beautiful 1956 UK first press
5-track deep groove mono LP on Esquire, one of Byrd's first
dates as a leader, also starring Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Doug
Watkins & Art Blakey. Comes housed in a unique fully laminated
flipback picture sleeve for the British market. Obtained from a
one previous owner collection of modern jazz LP rarities of the
fifties, this is a wonderful collector's example. The sleeve remains
in Excellent condition, no mean feat considering its age. On close
inspection, there is some minor shelf wear & the odd minor
crease in the laminate. The edges remain sharp & the colours are
stiking with no writing or tears. There is a light cosmetic blemish
to the front laminate, visible when held to light, & the original
inner bag is enclosed. Astonishingly, the labels are near 'as new'
with no signs of play. The heavyweight vinyl is Excellent to Near
Mint with an incredible deep sheen, we predict perhaps only ever
played once or twice in its life or even just handled a few times
for inspection. Recommended)

DONALD BYRD Byrd's Eye View (Blue Note Tone Poet
Series 2024 limited edition 5-track stereo LP cut directly
from the original analogue tapes, mastered by Kevin Gray at
Cohearent Audio and pressed at RTI on 180-gram vinyl.
Recorded in 1955 for producer Tom Wilson's short-lived
Boston-based label Transition Records, Byrd's Eye View was
trumpeter Donald Byrd's first issued recording as a leader.
The date presented Byrd at the helm of what was then the
current line-up of The Jazz Messengers with tenor
saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Doug
Watkins, and drummer Art Blakey. Local Boston area
trumpeter Joe Gordon joins the band for some friendly brass
sparring with Byrd on several numbers, further adding to the
album's jovial air of a blowing session. High quality tip-on
pasted blue-back picture sleeve, hype sticker & factory
sealed inside its loose bag. Recommended)

DONALD BYRD Byrd's Word (One-off One-Sided Test
Pressing for Side One of the 1956 mono LP, featuring
only the first two tracks of the album, the lovely 'Winterset' &
'Gotcha Goin' 'n' Comin'. These songs were recorded at the
Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey in
September 1955, with Frank Foster [tenor sax], Hank Jones
[piano], Paul Chambers [bass] & Kenny Clarke [drums]. The
second disc for side two, if there ever was one, is presumably
lost to the midst of time, that's how rare this item is. The
custom studio label has 'Factory Sample' printed at the top &
is rubber stamped with the artist, title, matrix & catalogue
detail. This heavyweight disc has been professionally cleaned
& play tested. Although there are a couple of hairlines &
scratches, on a mono playback setting, these small
interferences are largely left in the background, with just a
few clicks on occasion & the music to the fore. Even in this
condition [VG] the sound quality places you centre stage,
almost as if you were in the same room as the musicians, it's
that good! One for a keen collector LTZ-U15121)
