 | NICK DRAKE Bryter Layter (Rare 1970 UK first pressing 10-track
vinyl LP, issued on the pink rimmed Island 'palm tree' label with
textured picture sleeve. Often confused with the 1972 pressing with a
similar label, this is the very first issue. This copy is graded Very
Good condition. Full details of the differences between the two
pressings and condition can be found in the 'More Info' section...)
Tracklisting: 1. Introduction
2. Hazey Jane II
3. At The Chime Of A City Clock
4. One Of These Things First
5. Hazey Jane I
6. Bryter Layter
7. Fly
8. Poor Boy
9. Northern Sky
10. Sunday
As previously stated there has been much confusion between this original first pressing and the later 1972 issue with a very similar label design. The only way to tell the two apart is the minor label differences.
The later issue has the timings of the songs in brackets and the text 'Island Records Ltd' on the right hand side of the label next to the publishing date, while this first issue has the song timings left open (no brackets). The later issue also has Joe Boyd's production credit printed on two lines rather than just the one, and removes the 'stereo' notation.
Both issues are found with -1 matrix numbers in the run out groove.
The machine stamped matrix numbers are:
ILPS 9134 A -1U
ILPS 9134 B -1U
The 'pinched spine' sleeve was manufactured by EJ Day and has a matte textured finish with the Island 'i' logo and Basing Street address printed by the bottom edge on the reverse and is complete with original blue inner with pink 'i' logo and address.
The sleeve is graded Very Good, with some light edge scuffing along the edges and spine. There is a small amount of paper loss on the reversel.
The vinyl is strictly graded EX. The disc has been professionally cleaned & play tested. It plays through with minimal ambient surface noises. The beauty of his voice & the album's arrangements shine through loud & clear. Very minimal signs of wear, closer to Near Mint than Very Good
We thoroughly enjoyed play grading this classic. Graded conservatively, any fan should still be delighted with this example. We hardly ever see a genuine first issue! |
