"Why be predictable?," Willie Nelson asked Columbia Records executive Nick Blackburn, after the latter resisted the Red Headed Stranger's decision to make an album of classic pop tunes. Talk about outlaw country. Cutting against the genre's traditions and Music Row conventions, Nelson's Stardust remains a genius-level creation as well as the icon's most commercially successful release, a truly gorgeous record infused with ultimate respect for composers and lyrics and many of the finest performances of his career. It is a quintessential part of any catalog.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California, this Silver Label Series LP dazzles with dead-quiet surfaces, tube-like warmth, and an enhanced soundstage. Further exposing the delicate touches abounding in Stax legend Booker T. Jones' production, this edition brings out the textured kernels of Nelson's voice – and the deep-seeded dignity, austerity, devotion, grit, sensitivity, grace, and plaintiveness within it. His brilliant phrasing throughout is on par with that of Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, two giants that influenced this project and his willingness to pair with strings and small combo to wondrous effect.
Having met Jones while living in Malibu, Nelson established a relationship with the musician that extended to roles as producer, arranger and band mate. Jones' superior knowledge of the American Songbook comes through via the material's economy of scale and sympathetic approach. Acoustic guitar arpeggios, contrasting breaks, bluesy harmonicas, glowing organs, R&B-tinged horns, brushed drums, and relaxed bass lines trickle throughout the songs, all distinguished by Nelson's intimate timbre and absolutely astonishing vocal expressiveness.
In redefining and reimagining standards such as Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind," and the age-old "All of Me" – all of which landed in the Top 5 of the Country singles chart – Nelson wedded together pop, country, jazz, folk, and blues in a manner in which no artist had ever before done. He gained considerable rewards for his exquisite efforts: Stardust sold more than five million copies and, incredibly, stayed on the Country album charts for more than ten years.

Gatefold sleeve designed and photographed by Marcus Keef. Originally to be titled “War Pigs” this was changed at the last minute to avoid offending the US market due to their ongoing involvement in the Vietnam war. The original title makes more sense with Keef’s cover concept, with the sleeve unlaminated on the 1st pressing. Note the credit to Jim Simpson/Big Bear Managament on inner gatefold – this was immediately withdrawn as soon as it was issued due to contractual disputes between the band and Big Bear.
The sleeve was changed to a laminated finish (for 3rd and 4th reissue) due to substantial wear to the outer black finish on the 1st two matt versions – a greenish tinge and the edges of the outer cover where it has been ‘wrapped under’ and glued to the inner gatefold can be seen on many original sleeves.

“VERTIGO” below spindle hole.
This label design was used for both the first issue (with Big Bear credit – see notes above) and the second issue (with Big Bear credit removed from the inner gatefold). There are two further swirl reissues (with a laminated gatefold sleeve) with the smaller swirl logo and VERTIGO above the spindle – see labels below – and then the final Vertigo reissue on the spaceship label – possibly rarer than some swirl versions.

Condition
As seen with many copies of this album, the sleeve displays some general wear with scuffing to the edges & spine plus this example carries a paperloss spot just under the title, otherwise remains excellent.
Includes the original poly lined 'swirl' inner, which displays minimal shelfwear .
The labels have a some light marks around the spindle hole to show it has been played a few times, and to be honest who wouldn't want to play this classic album. Otherwise clean and free from any paper loss of writing
The vinyl is graded 'Excellent', with minimal surface marks, which are cosmetic. We have play tested, it plays through really well with the lightest background sound as you would expect to hear on an pressing over fifty years old.
A respectable first issue of this Sabbath masterpiece and priced accordingly .
